There are many rules and regulations, where everyone has an opinion about what is right and wrong. Dating etiquette is a personal thing. How you act may or may not dictate the situation depending on your date. Here is some of my dating expert advice that can help you get over those first date jitters and make sure things go smoothly.

1) Keep it short – Everyone thinks that a first date has to be something long and dragged out where you talk about several boring topics one after the other. It isn’t that important to talk about work or what your favorite colour is right now, there will be time for that later.

2) Have fun – Choose a venue that doesn’t facilitate long awkward stares and silences. Go grab a cup of coffee, or get something to eat from a food cart and walk around. There are million possibilities.

3) Guys, don’t show off – First dates should never occur in an upscale restaurant or venue where everyone is going to be uncomfortable, not to mention still hungry at the end of the date. Dinner in general is a bad idea for a first date, choose something fun and casual.

4) Check your baggage – If you’ve got a lot going on in your life, you should leave it at home. Take some time off from your problems, relax and have a good time.

5) Day dates are a good thing – If you don’t know the person well, it’s OK to go on a day date. Doing so might take some of that end of the date pressure off to invite them over for a nightcap. You’ll find that there are a lot of venues open during the day that aren’t at night which opens up a new world of possibilities.

6) Make decisions together – a lot of dating advice says to just make the decision, however, deciding on stuff together will say a lot about how well you work together and are able to compromise.

7) Go Dutch – decide before your first date that you will split the cost of whatever you decide to do. This will eliminate a lot of awkward fumbling with your wallet or purse at the end of the date.

8) Dress accordingly – Don’t overdo it, where something that is comfortable and appropriate for the situation. For example, don’t wear heels and your best jewelry for a walk in the park. That will make everyone uncomfortable.

9) Ladies, easy on the makeup – More isn’t always a good thing, this is especially true when it comes to makeup. Many women get nervous and try to cover every little imperfection, you’re human, revel in your imperfections!

10) Be yourself – This time we really mean it, showing that helps break the ice and make everyone more comfortable. “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.” –   — Dr. Seuss
